How we built this. The program list is the AVMA CVTEA accredited program directory for Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas and New Mexico, checked October 2026, with accreditation status as the AVMA lists it. Pay figures are BLS OEWS May 2025 state estimates for veterinary technologists and technicians. Tuition is not listed because it changes yearly; each program's own page is linked.

In this guide

This list comes from the AVMA's list of CVTEA-accredited programs, checked in October 2026. Accreditation can change, so confirm a program's status with the AVMA and the school before you apply. For the Texas license steps after graduation, see how to become a vet tech in Texas.

    Choosing a program

    • Check the accreditation status. Texas requires an AVMA-accredited degree for the LVT, so a non-accredited program will not get you licensed here.
    • Ask about VTNE pass rates. Accredited programs report their three-year VTNE pass rate, and many post it on the program page.
    • Plan for clinical hours. Every program, online ones included, requires hands-on work with animals. Ask where students do their externships.
    • Work while you study. Many students work as veterinary assistants during school. It builds skills and references. See vet tech vs vet assistant.

    How to choose between them

Every program on this page leads to the same VTNE and the same Texas LVT license, so the choice comes down to cost, format and outcomes. Ask each program:

    • Accreditation status. "Initial" accreditation is normal for a new program and still qualifies graduates for the VTNE; "probationary" means the AVMA has flagged problems. Check the AVMA list on the day you apply.
    • VTNE pass rate. Accredited programs publish their three-year first-time pass rate. Compare it with the national rate in the AAVSB handbook.
    • Total cost. Tuition and fees for the whole degree, including lab fees, uniforms, equipment and the cost of any required travel for clinical rotations.
    • Format. On-campus, hybrid or distance. Distance programs require you to arrange supervised clinical hours at a practice near you; ask how much help the program gives in finding one.
    • Schedule. Evening and weekend classes matter if you plan to keep working as an assistant, which most students do.
    • Where graduates go. Ask which hospitals hire from the program. Local teaching hospitals and large groups often recruit from specific schools.

Once you are enrolled, the Texas LVT guide covers the exam, fingerprints and fees, and Texas veterinary support jobs shows who is hiring assistants and techs near each campus.

    Questions people search for

How many accredited vet tech programs are in Texas?

The AVMA lists 15 CVTEA-accredited veterinary technology programs in Texas, counting each Pima Medical Institute campus separately. Nationally there are about 220 accredited programs.

Do I need an accredited program to become a Texas LVT?

Yes. The Texas Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners requires graduation from an AVMA-accredited program to sit for the Texas license, and it does not accept alternate routes. Graduates also pass the VTNE and the Texas State Board Exam.

Can I study vet tech online from Texas?

Some accredited programs offer distance learning, including San Juan College in New Mexico and Murray State College in Oklahoma. Distance programs still require hands-on clinical work, usually at a clinic near you. Check the program page for current requirements.

What does initial or probationary accreditation mean?

Initial accreditation is given to newer programs that have not yet graduated enough classes for full accreditation. Probationary means the AVMA found standards that need to be fixed. Graduates of programs with initial or probationary status can still sit for the VTNE, but ask the school about its status and plans before you enroll.
