Why the raw ranking misleads
The BLS table says District of Columbia pays vet techs the most, a median of $61,270. It also happens to be one of the most expensive places in the country to live, with a price parity of 110.8 against a national 100. California ($60,630, parity 112.6) and Washington ($59,740, parity 108.6) are the same story. High wages cluster where housing is dear, because clinics there have to pay more to staff a treatment room at all.
Divide each median by its price parity and the picture changes. Minnesota moves to the top at $58,201 in national-average dollars, District of Columbia is second at $55,298, North Dakota third at $55,068. The spread between the best and worst adjusted medians is $17,963, compared with $25,740 before adjustment: cost of living closes about 30 percent of the gap between states.
States that climb after adjustment
These states rank at least eight places higher once prices are counted. They are the places where a middle-of-the-market vet tech wage leaves the most room for rent, a car and a second job you no longer need.
- 1 South Dakota +19
- 2 Iowa +16
- 3 New Mexico +14
- 4 Kansas +13
- 5 North Dakota +13
- 6 Nebraska +11
A climb of 10 means the state is tenth from where its raw median put it.
South Dakota goes from rank 33 to 14 ($45,300 nominal, $51,419 adjusted), Iowa goes from rank 31 to 15 ($45,560 nominal, $51,306 adjusted), New Mexico goes from rank 34 to 20 ($44,790 nominal, $49,546 adjusted). None of these is a high-wage state on paper, which is exactly why postings there get overlooked by techs who sort by the raw number.
States that fall
- 1 New Jersey -21
- 2 Hawaii -19
- 3 Massachusetts -19
- 4 Connecticut -13
- 5 Maryland -12
- 6 New Hampshire -11
New Jersey drops from rank 15 to 36 ($49,050 nominal, $45,041 adjusted), Hawaii drops from rank 19 to 38 ($48,550 nominal, $44,705 adjusted), Massachusetts drops from rank 13 to 32 ($49,540 nominal, $45,786 adjusted). A fall is not a reason to avoid a state. It is a reason to negotiate on the posted number rather than assume the headline median is spendable, and to compare a specific metro's rent rather than the state average.
Texas, California and the District, side by side
| Jurisdiction | BLS median | Price parity | Adjusted | Nominal rank | Adjusted rank |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Texas | $39,410 | 97.2 | $40,545 | 43 | 50 |
| California | $60,630 | 112.6 | $53,845 | 2 | 6 |
| District of Columbia | $61,270 | 110.8 | $55,298 | 1 | 2 |
Texas employs more vet techs than any other state and ranks 43 on raw pay; adjusted, it moves to 50. California goes from 2 to 6, and the District from 1 to 2. None of the three gain ground after adjustment. The general rule holds everywhere: a state keeps its rank only if its wage premium over the national median is at least as large as its price premium.

How to use this when you compare offers
- Rank the states you would actually move to by the adjusted column, not the raw one. Then open the jobs for the top two and look at what clinics there list.
- Check the credential transfer first. A state that climbs the ranking is no use if your license takes six months to move. See credentials by state.
- Use a metro's rent, not the state's. The parity is a state average; the metro you would live in can sit well above or below it.
- Run your own number. The pay calculator has a cost-of-living toggle for any state and experience band, and compare my pay places your hourly rate on your state's ladder.
Questions people search for
Which state pays vet techs the most after cost of living?
Minnesota. Its BLS median of $57,270 divided by a 2023 regional price parity of 98.4 is worth about $58,201 in national-average dollars. District of Columbia ($55,298) and North Dakota ($55,068) follow.
Is California still a top state for vet tech pay after cost of living?
California's median is $60,630, rank 2 nationally, but its price parity of 112.6 means a dollar buys about 89 cents of national-average goods. Adjusted, the median is worth $53,845, rank 6.
What is a regional price parity?
A BEA index of how much goods, services and housing cost in a state compared with the national average, which is set to 100. A state at 90 is about 10 percent cheaper than average; a state at 110 is about 10 percent dearer. This guide uses the 2023 state table, the latest published.
Should I move to a cheaper state for the same pay?
Only if the adjusted figure, your credential transfer and the number of open jobs all line up. A state can look great on this table and still have few openings or a slow license transfer. Check the open-jobs column and the credentials by state guide before you decide.
Why does the adjusted figure not match my rent?
Price parities average housing, groceries, utilities and services across a whole state. Austin and Amarillo share one Texas figure. Treat the adjusted number as a first filter, then compare actual rent in the metro you would live in.
