From Minnesota Statutes 156.077 and 156.078 (effective July 1, 2026): the board licenses LVTs on an AVMA or CVMA accredited degree, the VTNE and the Minnesota jurisprudence exam, and the title veterinary technician or LVT is protected. Techs credentialed elsewhere apply for transfer with a diploma, two affidavits, good-standing certificates from every jurisdiction in the past ten years, VTNE scores (or three years of employment) and the jurisprudence exam. Fees, renewal cadence and CE hours are set by board rule and were not on the pages we read; the board site is mn.gov/boards/veterinary-medicine.

    Step by step

    1. Check your education route. An AVMA-CVTEA or CVMA accredited degree is accepted. If your credential came from an on-the-job or alternate pathway, email the Minnesota Board of Veterinary Medicine before you do anything else.
    2. Request your VTNE score transfer from the AAVSB. Only the AAVSB can send an official score report. Do it first; it is the slowest document.
    3. Have your school send a transcript direct to the board, and request verification from every board where you have held a credential, active or lapsed.
    4. Apply and sit the state exam. Minnesota requires the Minnesota Veterinary Technician Jurisprudence Examination. Fees are on the board fee schedule.
    5. Keep it current.
