The short version
- Graduate from an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology program. Two years for an associate degree; some schools offer four-year or distance programs with on-site clinical hours. The AVMA list can be filtered by state; we do not sell school placements and have no affiliate links.
- Pass the VTNE. The national exam from the AAVSB: 170 questions, three hours, four testing windows a year. Students in accredited programs can usually sit it in their final semester. Our how to become a vet tech guide covers the exam itself.
- Apply to the Alaska Board of Veterinary Examiners. Expect to send a transcript direct from the school, your VTNE score through the AAVSB, and verification from any other state where you held a credential.
- Keep it current. Renewal cadence is set by the board. CE hours are on the board site.

Is the credential required to work in Alaska?
Regulation usually controls two things: the title, and a list of tasks the practice act reserves for credentialed techs or veterinarians. In most regulated states, an uncredentialed person can still work in a clinic as an assistant under a veterinarian's supervision; they cannot call themselves a CVT and may be barred from some tasks (inducing anesthesia is the usual example). What is reserved differs state to state, so read Alaska's practice act or ask the board rather than trusting a job ad.
In practice the credential matters most when you move clinics. Credentialed-tech postings in Alaska are the ones that list the higher end of the pay ladder, ER and specialty hospitals screen for it, and it is what transfers to another state. Our credentials by state guide has the national picture.
What vet techs make in Alaska
- 1 Washington $59,740
- 2 Oregon $55,810
- 3 Hawaii $48,550
- 4 Alaska $46,480
Annual medians. Alaska highlighted. US median $47,380.
The BLS median for vet techs in Alaska was $22.35 an hour in May 2025, with the 10th percentile at $17.79 and the 90th at $36.45. Veterinary assistants in Alaska had a median of $17.54. Those are survey numbers across every setting, GP to ER to shelter; ER and specialty hospitals and the big metros tend to sit above the state median, rural GP below it. Pay is one input; the schedule, the ratio and who trains you matter as much, and the working interview is where you check them.

Schools in Alaska
The AVMA's Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities (CVTEA) accredits every program whose graduates can sit the VTNE in all 50 states. The list changes as programs open, close and go on probation, so we link to it rather than copy it: AVMA-accredited veterinary technology programs, filtered by Alaska. Things to check on the program page: accreditation status (full, initial, or probationary), the VTNE pass rate the program must publish, whether clinical hours are on campus or arranged at a clinic near you, and total cost. If Alaska has no on-campus program near you, several distance programs are accredited and place clinical hours at a local practice.
If you work in a clinic now, ask whether the practice pays tuition or gives schedule flexibility for school. It is a common benefit at the larger groups and worth more than most sign-on bonuses.
The Alaska job market right now
VetTeamJobs lists 13 open tech, assistant, CSR, kennel and manager jobs in Alaska as of the last refresh: 10 vet tech and 1 veterinary assistant among them. No DVM listings. Every Alaska job page shows the state's typical pay for the role next to what the clinic lists, and the filters let you narrow to ER, overnights, no-experience and relief.
Working in a Alaska clinic before you are credentialed
Most people start as an assistant or in the kennel and go to school while they work. It builds the skills the program will test, gives you references, and in some clinics gets your tuition paid. The one rule: do not use the CVT title until it is issued. See how to get a vet assistant job with no experience and vet tech vs vet assistant.
Moving to or from Alaska with a credential
Credentials do not transfer automatically. The receiving board wants your VTNE score (sent by the AAVSB), your transcript and verification from every board you have held a credential with. Graduates of accredited programs are accepted everywhere; alternate-route credentials are not. The step by step is on Alaska vet tech license transfer, and the 51-state table is in the license transfer hub.
Questions people search for
how long does it take to become a vet tech in alaska
Plan on about two years for an AVMA-accredited associate degree, then one VTNE window (the exam runs four times a year) and the Alaska Board of Veterinary Examiners's processing time, which is usually weeks, not months. Four-year programs take longer. If you already work in a clinic, the degree is the long part; the paperwork is short.
do you need a license to be a vet tech in alaska
Alaska regulates the CVT title through the Alaska Board of Veterinary Examiners. Whether you can work in a clinic without it depends on the state practice act: in many regulated states uncredentialed staff work as assistants under a veterinarian, but only credential holders may use the CVT title and perform the tasks the practice act reserves for them. Read the practice act or ask the board.
